They Knew it Before We Did
2019, Montreal
They Knew It Before We Did, is a process guided by the behavior of materials. Five wooden rods are exposed to vapor, softening and bending into slight curves. Heat and moisture release a liquid carrying traces of the wood’s color, which is collected and used to dye five pieces of linen. The dyed cloths are suspended between trees in Mont Royal in Montreal, where they move with the wind. The work follows a sequence of shifting states—solid, flexible, liquid, airborne—each emerging from the previous one. In the installation, the elements return to the space: wood and raw clay are dispersed, while the hanging cloths receive the projection of their own movement.
